The City of Algoma was named a 2016 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. The honor is bestowed on communities throughout the United States that commit to effective urban forest management. Algoma Mayor Wayne Schmidt says the recognition shows the investment Algoma has made to be environmentally conscious.
To achieve Tree City USA status, Algoma had to meet four requirements including a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance.
