Kewaunee County residents filled Algoma City Hall Monday to discuss what a Total Maximum Daily Load study would mean for their communities. Organized by Rep. Joel Kitchens and the Friends of Crescent Beach, officials from the Department of Natural Resources discussed efforts to study Lake Michigan tributaries in Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Sheboygan Counties. Don Niles from Peninsula Pride Farms says the session gave farmers a firmer grasp on the program and ideas for continuous improvement, even if it comes at a price.
TMDL plans are developed after considering all sources of pollution a waterway may be subject to and what it can handle before water quality standards significantly deteriorate. According to the DNR, there are four TMDLs ongoing in the state.
