The Stone fences and stone piles which were possibly going to be removed for road repairs along Highway 57 in Liberty Grove will stay put. Town Chairman John Lowry, says the Wisconsin DOT confirmed after a meeting last week that they would honor the town’s wishes to leave the stone fences and piles in place.
The Roadside Design Guide defines a clear zone as the total roadside border area, starting at the edge of the traveled way, available for safe use by errant vehicles. Lowrey says many residents had contacted the DOT about the stone fences and asked them to leave what the Door County Coastal Byway called “part of the historic and heritage culture”.
