After years of debate, it appears that the historic rock fences along State Highway 57 in Liberty Grove are safe. A release from Liberty Grove Town Clerk Janet Johnson posted Friday afternoon stated that after “a phone conversation on March 10th with the D.O.T. the rock fences and stone piles which were at risk of being removed for road repairs along Hwy 57 will not be removed.” A letter written by the Door County Coastal Byway states that the rock fences and stone piles are part of the area’s “historical and cultural heritage” and need to be preserved. The Department of Transportation have used the fences in the past as filling to level the road bed.
