Patricia D. (Pat) Vanness, 82 Kewaunee, WI Passed away peacefully March 3, 2017 with her husband at her side. Pat was born to the late Jacob E. Schlies and Emily A. (Mleziva) Schlies in Kewaunee, WI on March 16, 1934.
Pat attended Denmark High School. On November 14,1950 Pat married Clarence Vanness at All Saints Church in Denmark, Wisconsin.
Pat worked along with her husband Clarence making cheese together for over 40 years, first at Mutual Dairy Co-op and then at Alaska Farmers Co-op. She also enjoyed visiting with people from around the world while working in the cheese store at Alaska. Many times her sons were shown up by Mom when it came to turning cheese in the vats. She was an extremely hard worker and an excellent cook. Pat loved traveling with Clarence and visited many places. Her favorite being Laughlin, NV. Pat and Clarence also enjoyed their Sunday afternoon road trips to the casino, many times with friends Carolyn and Dana Gruetzmacher. Pat loved having the family together for all the holidays where she could spend time visiting with everyone.
Her children and grandchildren will always remember Pat for making over 400 Christmas cookies every year with them so everyone had enough to take home with them. Pat will also be remembered for her standard greeting when the boys or the grandkids would visit, “would you like a sandwich?” was always the first thing she said.
Pat is survived by her husband of 66 years, Clarence, five sons and four daughters-in-law, Gregg and Laurie Vanness, Kewaunee, Tim and Sue Vanness, McKinney, TX, Tom and Kathy Vanness, Kewaunee, Randy and Cindy Vanness, Kewaunee, and Todd Vanness, Kewaunee. Six Grandchildren, Cory(Amber)Vanness, Amber (Matt) Binney, Sean(Lindsay) Vanness, Ryan(Samantha) Vanness, Jamie (Jeremy) Jackson, Devin Vanness and friend Megan Hlinak and Amy (Kinjerski) Vanness. Great grandchildren, Rayna, Jonah, and Brynn Vanness, Micah Vanness and Gwen Binney, Reid and Leo Vanness, Aidan Vanness and baby Vanness due 4/23/2017, Brady and Haley Jackson.
She is further survived by her twin sister, Mary Ann (Clayton) Meyer, brother, Russell Schlies, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marie Marchant, Alvin Kugel, Louis B. and Rose Mae Schlies, Lawrence and Janet Vanness, and Connie and Rosie Vanness and numerous nieces and nephews. Also survived by members of the Joseph Selner family; Donald and Mary Selner, Diane Zimmer and Dennis and JoAnne Selner.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Emily Schlies, stepfather, Joseph Selner, father and mother-in-1aw, Louis and Alice Vanness, brothers-in-law, Clarence Marchant and Joseph Vanness, sisters-in-law Anna Kugel and Lucille Schlies, grandson Brad Vanness and a step-brother, Leon Zimmer.
Friends may call after 3:00pm on Thursday March 9th at Buchanan Funeral Home in Kewaunee. Parish wake service to be held at 7:00pm. Visitation continues at the funeral home on Friday until 10:30am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church in Kewaunee at 11:00am by Fr. William Swichtenberg. Entombment to take place at the Shrine of the Good Shepard Mausoleum.
Special thanks to Todd for all he did for Mom when she couldn’t anymore and also to the girls at Paradise Estates and Unity Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Mom.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
