In Girls WIAA Division 3 Sectional Semi-Finals action from Manitowoc, The Wrightstown Tigers were able to weather the Storm and come away with a 60-57 overtime victory. The Tigers went into half with 3 point 30-27 lead after the Storm opened up the game showering 3 pointers early on. Ellie Olsen nailed 3 and Baumgartner & Dax each had one.
The first part of the second half saw the Tigers lead bounce back and forth between 3 & 5 points and then they went on a small run to reach the biggest lead of the game at 9. The Storm then started to chip away with tough defense and perfect free throw shooting. They were able to tie the game in the last minute and then saw Wrightstown go down the floor and make a bucket at the buzzer, but it was wiped off by the officials saying that the ball did not leave Van Zeeland’s hand before time expired.
So the game went to overtime. Kewaunee jumped out to a 4-point lead, but the Tigers were able to cut it to two. On the next Storm possession Abby Baumgartner drove to the hoop and appeared to draw heavy contact and the ball came up short. The Tigers took the ball up the court and Froehlke found an opening about 18″ behind the arc on the right wing and nailed a perfect 3 point shot to give the Tigers the lead by one. Kewaunee could not convert on their next possession and had to foul to get the ball back. Van Zeeland was good on both free throws and with 6 seconds left Kewaunee was not unable to get a shot off to tie the game .
The Storm were lead in scoring by Senior Brooke Geier with 20 points, Sara Dax added 15, Olsen 13 & Baumgartner finished it off with 9. The Storm shot a perfect 16-16 from the charity stripe in the loss.
Wrightstown’s Bridget Froehlke led all scoring with 21, the freshman put on quite a show coming off the bench. Kailee Van Zeeland chipped in 13 for the Tigers who will play Amherst Saturday night for the sectional championship and a trip to the State Tournament.
