The Southern Door Eagles ended the 2016-2017 Packerland Conference schedule with an exclamation mark. A 76-42 win over Sevastopol ensured the conference crown for the third year in a row. That is something no varsity boys basketball team has done in the history of the school.
Nick LeCaptain scored 27 points in the win over the Pioneers including seven three-point field goals. Sam Gerend poured in five more three’s en route to 19 points for the Eagles.
Southern Door ends the regular season (13-1) in conference play and (19-3) overall. Coach Derik Hawkey said after the game, “I couldn’t be any more proud of these guys. All year we did things together as a family. The self-belief this team has in one another was more than I could have ever hoped for. Not only were they tremendous for me on the floor, but off of the court I did not have one single issue all year with any members of the team. That makes me more proud than winning the title. There’s something to be said for doing things the right way and these kids lived up to everything I demanded from them both on and off the court. Great parents, great fans, great support and advice from past and present members of Southern Door High School and most importantly great young men to coach. All of these things added up in the end to a season I could only dream of. Not only did I witness our very young team continually grow throughout the year but I grew as well. I look forward to switching our focus and mindset on the “2nd Season” this year!”
The Eagles earned a #3 seed in the regional tournament and will host #14 Kewaunee next Tuesday to open up tournament play.
