Washington Island officials hope its electors will approve the town’s purchase of land to be used for spreading septic and holding tank waste. With a limited tax base to draw from, Washington Island town chairperson Jim Hanson says it simply cannot afford to build and maintain a traditional wastewater treatment plant. The purchase of the property, which according to town meeting minutes could handle 400,000 to 500,000 gallons of waste, would be an important step for the island to take according to Hanson.
The town board has contacted land owner Lonnie Jorgenson about its interest in the property, but the sale must be approved by the electors at its 2017 annual meeting in April
