The Southern Door Varsity Boys Basketball program accomplished something never before done in the history of the school. The Eagles guaranteed at least a share of the Packerland Conference title for the third year in a row by defeating Sturgeon Bay 59-42 at Eagle Gym. The game was broadcast live on 104.1 FM WRLU.
“A Three-Peat is something we talked about as one of our team goals before the season started,” according to Coach Derik Hawkey. The Eagles were down 17-12 early in the first half then erupted and never looked back. Southern Door led 31-25 at the half and kept the margin at double digits for a large share of the second half.
Sam Gerend scored 10 points, Kyle Daoust added 12 and the LeCaptain Brothers combined for 32 in the Eagles win (Derik (13) Nick (19)). Ironically, exactly ten years to the date of Derik Hawkey scoring his 1,000th point the Eagles secured the school’s first ever back-to-back-to-back conference championship.
Sturgeon Bay was led by Mitchel Jackson despite heavy foul trouble in the second half with 12 points. Connor Gajda scored nine points and Jared Van Bramer tallied eight points in the loss.
Regional tournament seeding will be announced Sunday. The Eagles hope to be a top-two seed whereas the Clippers may have fallen to a three, four, five or six seed with the defeat Friday night.
At halftime of the varsity game the two newest members of the Southern Door Athletic Hall of Fame were enshrined. Pete Birmingham and Greg Klaubauf joined 36 others into this prestigious fraternity.
