You can add author to the resume of commercial angler and Gills Rock business owner Matt Velguth. His book, “The Gills Rock Petragraphs: Archives of Stone” tells the true story of a 1600s-era battle between the Anishinabe and Iroquois Federation tribes. Told now only through the Pottatomie oral tradition and by faded rock paintings found near the water, Velguth says the preservation of these stories of Indian warfare is important for future generations.
The book is available at select northern Door County businesses and online. Velguth says efforts are underway to build a dock to provide educational tours and help protect the area to preserve its history.
