With the tax season here, law enforcement is reminding people to be vigilant in protecting their identity from fraud and scam artists. State and federal tax authorities are finding more and more criminals filing fraudulent tax returns using other people’s personal information. Kewaunee County Sheriff Matt Joski says scammers can trick you into giving out your social security number over the phone.
Victims of tax fraud can deal with long-delayed returns and concerns about who has their personal information and if they may use it again illegally. You are urged to report any suspected tax identity theft to the IRS and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue as well as local law enforcement.
