The Southern Door Varsity Wrestling Team competed at the Herb Tyler Invite at Sheboygan North High School over the weekend.
The Eagles went with a split squad this weekend choosing to send several wrestlers to a good JV tournament at Bayport for experience. With only 8 wrestlers we placed a respectable 9th in the 22 team field. Random Lake showed why they are ranked #5 in D3 easily winning the title while a number of teams in the middle were fairly even.
Winning titles were River Pawelski at 132 and Michael Bertrand at 160. River breezed into the finals where he earned a 10-1 major decision over Boerner of Cedarburg (Ranked #9 D1). A good day for River who has been struggling in a slight mid season slump. Michael was slowed down a little in his quarterfinal match winning by major decision 18-10. He followed that with pin in the semi’s and a tech fall in the finals. Michael continues to wrestle well and work to hone his skills for the post season.
Tory Jandrin placed 2nd at 195 to Huiras of Random Lake (Ranked #4 D3). Tory lost another tough overtime match in the finals (also lost in OT in the finals at Cedar Grove two weeks ago). Tory pushed the pace the entire match and looked to be the better wrestler. After getting the first takedown he gave up and escape then gave up a close takedown out of bounds at the end of the 2nd period which would prove costly. In overtime it was the same thing with Tory giving up a close takedown out of bounds. We’ll learn from this one and look to make some adjustments. We expect Tory will meet Huiras again in the post season.
Fischer Pawelski placed 5th at 113. After a first round pin then a tough loss (to Harrington of Valders ranked #10 D2) Fischer bounced back with 3 straight pins to place. It was a good day for Fischer to build some confidence heading into the last tournament of the year and regionals.
