The city of Algoma is working with area businesses and local officials to lessen the impact of the closure of Algoma Hardwoods in 2017. Mayor Wayne Schmidt formed a task force earlier this month to work with the Bay Area Workforce Development Board and government officials on job placement and training opportunities for the 180 employees expected to be affected by the plant’s closure. City administrator Jeff Wiswell says Algoma will continue to be strong, especially in its manufacturing sector.
Wiswell says businesses in Algoma employ over 1,100 individuals. Work at Algoma Hardwoods is expected to slow down next month before it ultimately closes in the summer of 2017.
