With two big damaging fires this past weekend in Door and Kewaunee County, cooperation between area fire departments is huge in effectively fighting blazes. The apartment fire in the town of Union, which saw 27 crews from three counties respond, was a prime example of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) program. BUG Fire Chief Curt Vandertie says in this case MABAS helped to supply much needed additional resources.
MABAS, is a pre-planned coordinated effort and is used anytime a fire department requires more than a single resource from a single department. It allows better proficiency that helps in using it for larger incidents like Sunday night’s fire in Union, according to Vandertie.
