Mayor Thad Birmingham and alderperson Kelly Catarozoli sparred with each other over an amended proposal for a Premiere Economic Development District on Sturgeon Bay’s west side during Tuesday’s meeting. Catarozoli made a motion to the Common Council to accept an amended map of the PEDD, which included land slated for future development in a 2014 concept plan presented by architectural firm Vandewalle and Associates. Birmingham told the Common Council that current agreements with businesses like Sonny’s, the Door County Maritime Museum, and others would not make the development likely due to possible litigation.
Catarozoli says depending on the result of the city’s pending lawsuit with the Friends of the Sturgeon Bay Public Waterfront, the PEDD maps would have to be amended anyways.
The Common Council rejected Catarozoli’s amendment by a vote of 5-2 margin. It passed the original plan for the PEDD by the same margin.
