Kewaunee School District staff members and students expect to be able to use some of its newest facilities on its first day back after winter break. Finishing up the first phase of its $16.2 million facilities improvement project, the new agricultural science building and maintenance shed are completed. Staff members got a chance to see the new district office Monday while equipment and files are transferred from its old home at the former Hillcrest Elementary building. Kewaunee School District Superintendent Karen Treml says it has been exciting to see the buildings rise and rooms transform after breaking ground earlier this year.
Hillcrest Elementary will be demolished next year after asbestos abatement takes place to make room for the district’s new soccer fields. An open house to check out the improvements, which also include a new fitness center and auxiliary gym, is being tentatively scheduled for February 22.
