It took 27 crews from Door, Kewaunee , and Brown Counties and an all-night effort to extinguish a fire inside an apartment building in the town of Union early Monday morning. The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department was called to scene just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday night after residents called to report a fire near the building’s furnace. After several attempts to enter the basement of the converted building failed, firefighters had to handle the blaze outside once it spread to the roof. B.U.G. Fire Chief Curt Vandertie says the conditions for fighting the fire were unfavorable to the firefighters and their equipment.
No injuries were reported. but the four apartment units within the building are considered a total loss. Firefighters cleared the scene just before 7 a.m. after nearly 12 hours of work.
