Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding which purchased the old former Ahnapee & Western Railroad depot in downtown Sturgeon Bay has no plans on tearing down the vacant building. Vice-President and General Manager Todd Thayse says the company realizes the historic significance of the building and is looking into initial plans to utilize in the next year. 1st District Sturgeon Bay Common Council member Kelly Catarozoli says the structure is important to the community.
The former Ahnapee & Western Railroad depot was built in 1912 before ceasing activity as a train station in 1968. The building was used for several businesses before being purchased by Bay Shipbuilding last April.
