The Gibraltar Girls Basketball team suffered their second Packerland Conference loss of the season Friday night when they were defeated on the road against Green Bay N.E.W Lutheran 47-41. The Vikings and Blazers exchanged many lead changes during the first half, up until the last four minutes or so. Sloppy basketball was all that remained during the first half as both teams had muliple empty possessions due to careless fouls or errant turnovers. After the game Coach Josh Kropuenske this type of play is not what he is used to seeing from his team.
Peyton Pluff led the Vikings in scoring with 17, and a slew of rebounds. Sheridan Ash scored 11 points before she fouled out of the game late in the second half for the first time this season. Hannah Helm had some nice passes and a long three pointer that sparked a small momentum change a couple minutes into the second half. However, the Blazers were the team to make the adjustments at halftime and take over the game.
Morgan Meerstein, and Afton Wenger were terrific on both ends of the court. On offense Meerstein led the Blazers with 20 points, Wenger followed up with producing 12 of her own with 6 of those coming by free throws later in the game that would prove to be the difference. The game was as close as a one point differential during the second half, but everytime Gibraltar tried to apply a full court press or trap, the Blazers had an answer when it came to bringing the ball up the court. Head Coach Josh Kropuenske blames himself for the loss and says he didn’t do a good enough job preparing the girls for this game.
The Vikings next play on Tuesday against Oconto at 7:30, while the Blazers will travel to Sturgeon Bay to play the Clippers that same evening.
