|Pastor Larry Zessin, age 76, died unexpectedly on Friday, November 25, 2016. He was born in Chicago on October 24, 1940 to Irene and Irvin Zessin. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Sturgeon Bay. In 1954 he attended Northwestern Preparatory School in Watertown, and graduated from Northwestern College in 1962. He attended Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon and graduated in 1965.
In 52 years of public ministry (1965-2016), he served WELS congregations in Minnesota (Goodview Trinity, Winona and First Lutheran Minnesota City), as missionary to the island of Antigua in the West Indies, and congregations in Wisconsin (St. Paul, Menomonie, Grace, Oshkosh, St. Peters, Sturgeon Bay and Emanuel’s, Kohlberg). He also served the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod as circuit pastor and committees for Campus Ministry, Lutheran Pioneers, Evangelism and Stewardship. He retired from part time ministry in May 2016 and moved to Omro to be with family.
He loved life surrounded with his family and friends as well as outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and camping in their RV. He also enjoyed exploring his ancestry and heritage, and adding laughter to everyone’s lives with is humorous ability to tell a good joke and story. His sermons glorified the Lord while encouraging and inspiring the hearts of many in church or on the radio. He loved to share Psalm 23.
Pastor Zessin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dolores, three children: Natalie (Charlie) Pratt of Oshkosh, Michael (Alisa) Zessin of Oshkosh, and Beth (Donn) Dobberstein of Port Orange, FL; seven grandchildren: Rebecca, Daniel, Crystal, Caleb, Lydia, Aleah and Levi. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and nephew, Kenny.
Funeral service will be held at 11:0 am on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Living Water Lutheran Church, 1585 S. Oakwood St, with Pastor John Dorn officiating. Friends and family may visit on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the church from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm with Devotion at 6:30 pm and also on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service.
Memorials may be directed toward Living Water Lutheran Church.
