The impact of the closure of Algoma Hardwoods could be felt in the classrooms located just a few miles away. Parent company Masonite International Corporation announced earlier this month that it would shutter the 100-plus year old architectural door factory, impacting close to 180 jobs in the process. Algoma School District Superintendent Nick Cochart says the impact is still unknown to the board and to him, but discussions are taking place just in case enrollment drops because of the closure.
The Bay Area Workforce Board has been working with employees at Algoma Hardwoods to update their resumes and help them find work as production at the plant is expected to begin slowing down in January.
