The prevalence of drugs and alcohol in connection to crimes in Door County continues to be a surprise for Circuit Court Judge David Weber. Practicing mostly in civil law before his appointment to the bench earlier this year, Weber estimates that eight out of every ten criminal cases he hears involves either drugs or alcohol. With 74 fully operational treatment courts in the state covering drugs, alcohol, mental health, and other categories, Weber says Door County has some hurdles to jump before it establishes its own.
According to Weber, treatment courts are often cheaper in the long run, citing the high costs of incarceration and the programs available to those convicted.
