Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource local warden Chris Kratcha cautions hunters to check and make sure their stands and trees are safe. With wind gusts up to 50 MPH and the first winter storm of the year hitting as the nine-day gun deer hunt begins, deer stand safety is being addressed locally. It is so windy today that the area is under a wind advisory until midnight on Sunday. The high winds have caused Kratcha to issue a warning to hunters.
Typically firearm safety is the top concern among hunter, but Kratcha says nationwide study indicated 500-600 people a year die in tree stand falls. Research also indicates that one out of every three hunters will fall out of a tree stand at some point in their life. The annual gun deer hunt began this morning and runs through Sunday the 27th.
