Architectural door and mineral core manufacturer Masonite International Corporation announced Wednesday that it plans to close its facility in Algoma. According to the company press release, Masonite will begin reducing its production at Algoma Hardwoods gradually beginning in January before ceasing operations in June. City administrator Jeff Wiswell calls this a big blow for the community.
Algoma Hardwoods employed approximately 150 to 180 people and has been making high-quality door products for over a century. Wiswell says they have already reached out to local, state, and federal legislators to see what the next step will be.
