The basement of a Brussels home was damaged when a fire started Monday evening. The Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department reported to 9797 Cemetery Road just after 4 p.m. when the owner called in a report of smoke in the basement. Crews were able to see flames through the windows and were able to contain the fire to the basement before extinguishing it and leaving the scene at 6 p.m. B.U.G. Fire Chief Curt Vandertie says it was a good thing the owner was nearby.
Vandertie says the upstairs portion of the home only suffered smoke damage. No one was hurt in the blaze and the investigation into the exact cause of the fire is ongoing.
