Door County has considered the pros and cons of a wheel tax like the one recently passed in Milwaukee County and are hoping to go in a different direction. A wheel tax would charge driving residents more money when they renew their annual registration fee. The implementation of wheel taxes has started across the country to generate money for road maintenance. Ken Pabich, Door County Administrator says that after doing some research there seemed like better options for the area.
An option that gained a little more traction was a .5% sales tax increase, designated to help pay for road repair. The thought being that it would even the playing field for residents and tourists who use the same roads. But, it did not get into the legislator before they went on recess.
