Just because the fruit is off the trees at local area orchards, doesn’t mean that there’s no work left to be done. Local Sturgeon Bay orchard owner Steve Wood says one of the biggest challenges following the harvest includes mowing the entire property so they can eliminate the nesting of rodents in their fields during the winter.
Thanks to a successful harvest, Wood has a larger task in front of him: distributing the rest of his inventory.
Orchard owners hope to improve on last year’s harvest of 51.9 million pounds which is down 5% from 2014, according to the United States Department of Agriculture.
